Recognizing the need for a new hospital, a group of concerned citizens organized a corporation in 1955 to plan and construct Cumberland Memorial Hospital. The original Hospital provided 24 beds and was completed in 1956.
In 1961, the Hospital Board of Directors and the Barron County Board of Supervisors cooperated in the construction of the Barron County Nursing Home in Cumberland. Six years later, the 56-bed nursing home was turned over to the community, which in turn became a part of Cumberland Memorial Hospital and Extended Care Unit, Inc. (CMH-ECU). Currently, the Extended Care Unit is licensed for 50 resident beds.
Many changes have been made to the original structures over the past years. The obstetrics area was added to the hospital in 1963. Five years later, in response to the increasing demand for hospital services, the 16-bed east wing addition was constructed. It was also in 1968 that the administrative wing and ambulance garage were added. The current dietary area was completed in 1972, and in 1976 a lounge and conference areas were added to the east wing. A large addition was completed in 1980 providing private occupancy rooms, a new surgery suite, and support areas. On July 1, 1987, the addition of a locked psychiatric unit was completed. In 1988, Lakewood Regency Apartment, a 20-unit congregate housing apartment building, was constructed with completion on February 1, 1989. In 1993, an outpatient behavioral health clinic was created to better serve the mental health needs of the region. In 1996, property adjacent to the hospital grounds, previously the site of a used car business, was purchased. The structure was remodeled for use as an ambulance garage with attendant quarters. Also in 1996, CMH-ECU psychiatric services were named NorthWest Regional Center.
CMH-ECU continues to upgrade its facilities to meet the changing needs in health care services. Outpatient behavioral health services, NorthWest Regional Center, was established in a new facility completed in 1998.
1999 brings another upgrade to CMH and the Cumberland Medical Clinic by connecting the two facilities and utilizing a common entrance. A new obstetrical unit, "The Birthplace," was also added to the current CMH structure, as well as a new business office area. The new construction and remodeling project also involved the relocation of some departments from the lower level to the main floor and establishing a same-day surgery suite in the lower area.
The name on the canopy over the new entrance is "Cumberland Regional Health Care," however, the two business entities remain distinct and separate, still doing business as Cumberland Memorial Hospital and Cumberland Medical Clinic. The building name encompasses the services provided, as well as a listing of practicing physicians.
