We have a flexible and accessible policy, making it easy for family and friends to see you and your newest addition. We ask that all visitors be free of any illness, including fever, runny nose, coughing, etc. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
At Cumberland Healthcare we understand the importance of patient education. We are please to offer a one-to-one breast feeding class and sibling class. We also offer group childbirth education classes that will teach you the difference between true and false labor, the stages of labor and various relaxation techniques for coping during the labor process. Other options include massage, labor positions, visualization, breathing techniques and medication options. In addition, we will discuss the support person role, other interventions in labor, cesarean births and post-partum care for the mother and newborn. To schedule any of these classes, please call (715) 822-7250.
This program is offered at no charge and is available to all patients that are delivering at The Birthplace. During this time you will meet with an OB nurse to discuss and review any questions you may have about labor and delivery, what to expect while in the hospital and the first six weeks at home. During this meeting, you will start the process of writing your birth plan so when your special day occurs our staff is ready to meet your needs. Together, we will be able to create the birth experience you have planned and hoped for. This meeting is usually set up during your third trimester.
Every family delivering at The Birthplace is offered a free home visit after discharge. This visit is scheduled at a time that is convenient for you.
What to expect during your home visit:
- A Birthplace nurse will come to your home and weigh your baby, check vital signs for both mom and baby, assist with any feeding troubles and answer any questions that you may have. If you choose not to have a home visit, a Birthplace nurse will provide you with a follow up phone call and answer any questions or concerns that you may have.
Newborn Hearing Screening
All babies born at The Birthplace will receive a hearing screening that is conducted 24 hours after birth. This is a non-invasive process and is conducted when your newborn is sleeping. The equipment sends a series of soft tones to the ear and measures for a response. Results are available prior to discharge. Early detection of hearing loss ensures early treatment.
Screening for Congenital Heart Defects
All babies born at The Birthplace will receive a simple screening to check for heart defects. This is conducted 24 hours after birth. A sensor is placed on the baby’s wrist and foot. Results are available prior to discharge.
In celebration of your baby’s birth, we offer a mom and baby gift to take home and enjoy donated by Cumberland Healthcare staff.
Safe Place for Newborns
In April 2001 the State of Wisconsin enacted a law which enables any woman on the verge of abandoning her newborn to anonymously turn over her unharmed newborn within 72 hours to any Wisconsin hospital employee, police officer or emergency personnel without fear of prosecution. Cumberland Healthcare is fully prepared to accept these newborns, assess them and provide a safe and caring environment until placement is arranged. In addition, if possible we provide a packet of information to the birth mother including self-care information and support group resources.
