Nutrition Therapy

Providing comprehensive nutrition consultation services for patients of all ages in inpatient and outpatient settings to treat or manage many health conditions. Promoting health and disease prevention through education and counseling patients with conditions that may improve with diet and lifestyle changes.

Are you fueling your body or just filling your body?  How you eat affects your mood, energy level, and overall health.  Proper nutrition is essential to staying well.  It is also a key component of treating or managing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, obesity, and high blood pressure.  Cumberland Healthcare can provide comprehensive nutrition consultation services for patients of all ages in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Clinical Nutrition

Clinical Nutrition Services treat healthy individuals and those seen for acute or chronic illnesses or conditions.  Physicians offer to refer the patient to a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist for Nutrition Therapy.  These professionals have an extensive scientific background in food, nutrition, biochemistry, and physiology and may specialize in areas such as diabetes education, cardiac disease, or weight management.  They promote health and disease prevention and educate and counsel patients with conditions that may improve with diet and lifestyle changes.

With many medical conditions, nutrition is often part of the therapy prescribed.  These areas can include:

*Cardiac Disease

*Celiac Disease

*Crohn’s Disease

* Diabetes

*Eating Disorders

*Food Allergies

* Lactose Intolerance

* Metabolic Disorders

* Obesity

Outpatient Nutrition Services

To arrange an appointment with the Registered Dietitian, please call 715-822-7072.  Your healthcare provider can refer you to the Registered Dietitian, and your insurance may require a referral. Many health insurance plans will cover this service (contact your insurance carrier and ask about your coverage on medical nutrition therapy for the specific diagnosis and if prior authorization is required.)  Please get in touch with our office for fee information if you do not have insurance coverage.

The Top Ten Reasons for Consulting with a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) Can Benefit You:

  1. You have diabetes, cardiovascular problems, or high blood pressure. A registered dietitian can be an integral part of your healthcare team by helping you to change your eating plan without compromising flavor.
  2. You are thinking of having or have had gastric bypass surgery. A registered dietitian will help you learn to eat again. Because your post-operative stomach will only manage small servings, getting the right amount of nutrients for your body can be challenging. An R.D. will work with you and your physician to develop a nutrition plan for your new needs.
  3. You have digestive problems. A registered dietitian will work with your physician to fine-tune your diet so you are not aggravating your condition with fried foods, too much caffeine, or carbonation.
  4. You’re pregnant or trying to conceive. A registered dietitian can help ensure you get proper nutrients like folate, especially during the first three months of pregnancy, which can lower your newborn’s risk for neural tube or spinal cord defects. A certified diabetes educator (C.D.E.) or R.D. can help you through a gestational diabetes pregnancy.
  5. You need guidance and confidence in breastfeeding your baby. A registered dietitian can help ensure you get enough iron, vitamin D, fluoride, and B vitamins to benefit you and your newborn.
  6. Your teenager has issues with food and eating healthfully. A registered dietitian can assist patients with eating disorders– like anorexia, bulimia, and overeating issues that cause unhealthy weight or obesity.
  7. You’re struggling with weight concerns and need to gain or lose weight. A registered dietitian can provide nutritional calorie-source information for healthy weight gain or recommend a healthy, restricted-calorie eating plan–accompanied by regular physical activity–that will allow you to continue enjoying most of your favorite foods.
  8. You’re caring for an aging parent. A registered dietitian can assist with information on food and drug interactions, proper hydration guidelines, special diets for hypertension, and changing taste buds.
  9. You want to eat smarter to stay fit. A registered dietitian can help you sort through misinformation and get you on a healthier eating plan. You can learn how to read labels at the supermarket, how healthy cooking can be inexpensive, how to dine out without ruining your nutrition plan, and how to resist the many temptations in your work, home, and social environment.
  10. You want to improve your prowess in your favorite sport. A registered dietitian can help you set goals to achieve higher athletic performance, whether running a marathon, skiing or jogging with your dog.
  11. Is your weight affecting your health?

Medical nutrition therapy usually includes an individualized caloric assessment, menu planning assistance, food label information, grocery shopping tips, exercise guidelines, and suggestions for healthier choices when dining out.  To arrange an appointment with the Registered Dietitian or for questions, please call 715-822-7072.
