Low Dose Lung Cancer Screening

Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screening

Early Detection Can Save Lives

Lung cancer screening can help find lung cancer at an early stage when it is easier to treat.  According to the American Lung Association, “At this time, studies have shown that a low-dose CT scan is the only lung cancer screening tool that reduces the risk of dying from lung cancer.”

Shared Decision-Making Session

Before scheduling your imaging study, you must have a shared decision-making session with your healthcare provider.

The purpose of this visit is to:

  • Review the rationale for lung cancer screening

  • Ensure you understand the implications of possible findings

  • Emphasize the importance of tobacco cessation

This conversation helps you make an informed choice about whether screening is right for you.

Risks & Benefits of Screening

Potential Risks

  • False Positive or Negative Tests – Results may suggest cancer when none exists, or miss existing cancer.

  • Increased Radiation Exposure – Even though the dose is low, repeated scans add exposure over time.

  • False Reassurance – A negative scan doesn’t guarantee the absence of disease.

Potential Benefits

  • Early Detection of Lung Cancer – Identifies cancer before symptoms develop.

  • Reduced Lung Cancer Deaths – Early treatment can significantly improve survival.

  • Opportunities for Tobacco Cessation – Screening visits encourage patients to quit smoking.

You may qualify for Low-Dose CT (LDCT) Lung Cancer Screening if you meet all of the following:
