PULMONARY REHABILITATION

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a medically supervised program that helps people diagnosed with lung problems manage their breathing through exercise and controlled breathing techniques. It also helps them recognize symptoms and improve general health and conditioning.

Our pulmonary medicine and rehabilitation program is a restorative and preventive process for patients with chronic respiratory diseases. As lung function declines, shortness of breath worsens, and independent daily activities become increasingly difficult. Pulmonary Rehabilitation provides training to improve patients’ ability to manage and cope with their limitations.

Pulmonary medicine and rehabilitation services include critical components of assessment, physical reconditioning, skills training, and psychological support.

Our pulmonary services focus on patients with:

  • Asthma
  • Chest Wall Diseases
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Emphysema
  • Lung cancer
  • Before and After Lung Surgery

      • Continued symptoms of shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, activity limitations, fatigue, and decreased quality of life.
      • The patient needs to be 30-90 days post-hospitalization or post-diagnosis. The time frame depends on the person’s illness; it is longer if the condition worsens.
      • Treatment involves gentle exercise, education, and breathing techniques. It is very similar to other cardiac or pulmonary rehab programs. Typical sessions are 2-3 days per week, up to 36 sessions. Insurance coverage can be verified, and options for payment can be found.

PULMONARY REHABILITATION

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO BREATH

Pulmonary Rehabilitation helps people diagnosed with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema, bronchitis), patients requiring a lung transplant, and other pulmonary conditions. The program combines exercise, education, and breath training to help people achieve and maintain their maximum independence and living. The program’s goal is for a person with lung disease to be able to do daily activities with less shortness of breath. Kelly Mathison, Respiratory Therapist, will customize a program for each individual. Cumberland Pulmonary Rehab is part of the Wisconsin Society for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Health and Rehabilitation. www.wiscphr.org.
