Pelvic Floor Tension/Pain

Pelvic floor tension or pain in the sling of muscles that support the bladder, uterus, and rectum can be caused by muscle, joint, and nerve problems. Individuals may have difficulty sitting, experience pain during intercourse, or experience pain in the hips or lower abdomen. Rehabilitation/treatment may include pelvic floor muscle relaxation training, manual therapy, or biofeedback.

Incontinence is the loss of bladder or bowel control resulting in the involuntary loss of urine or stools. Weakness in the muscles that make up the “pelvic floor” can result in a loss of support for the bladder, uterus, or rectum, potentially resulting in incontinence. Incontinence of urine may be termed “stress” or “urgency” and may cause urinary frequency. Rehabilitation/treatment may include the clinical use of electrical stimulation, biofeedback, or an individualized exercise program.

Obstetrical Dysfunction

Orthopedic and High Risk

Pregnant women may suffer from pain or aching in the low back, shoulder blades, rib cage, groin area, or wrists dues to changes in posture, weight, or hormonal factors. Not only are these women more susceptible to injury during pregnancy, but related orthopedic problems may persist or begin the following pregnancy. Maternity supports, manual therapy, and strengthening or retraining techniques are typical treatments. For a woman with a high-risk pregnancy, bed rest is often necessary. To help offset the effects caused by bed rest, a physical therapist can design an individualized program consisting of exercises, positioning recommendations, and relaxation training. Post-delivery rehabilitation includes strengthening and endurance training.

Scar Management

Many women suffer from scar tissue pain after a surgical procedure or episiotomy. Most often, such pain is due to hypersensitivity (increased sensation) of the newly healed tissue or due to movement restriction involving the skin and underlying tissue. A physical therapist can assist in decreasing the sensitivity and increasing the mobility of the scarred area through manual mobilization techniques.

Osteoporosis is when bones become thin or brittle, causing them to break more easily. Therapy programs include instruction in proper body mechanics, exercise, gait instruction, balance training, aquatic therapy, brace application, and education on injury prevention. Modalities such as moist heat, ice, ultrasound or electrical stimulation may be utilized to assist with pain control.
